About Justin Redman: As a competitive surfer he burst onto the scene as a fresh faced boundary pushing surfer in the mid 1990s and became one of the Sunova Team riders back in 1996. A Longboarding aerial specialist, Redman was never blessed with the ‘perfect’ surfer physique, more muscular than stout. However his natural ability to see a wave earlier than most, he was able to take advantage of the best each wave he had to offer. His notoriety increased after his victory in the Australian Longboard Championships at Yallingup in 2001, and Redman’s career continued to rise.
Achievements - State Longboard Champion – 10 maybe more times. Sorry, lost count! 2005 stopped competing due to knee ligament damage and to save money for a house. |

Snapshot of Events (1.)Second round of the ILUKA SURFWEAR STATE LONGBOARD SERIES 2005 Redman makes it two in a row to take out the blue ribbon event of the Second State Longboard Round. Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 24 May, 2005 : - - Clean inconsistent 0.5 to 1m waves tested the resourcefulness of competitors in the second round of the Iluka Surfwear Longboard series at Trigg beach on the weekend. A record amount of 90 entrys and a huge contingent of younger girl competitors the second round of the Iluka Surfwear Longboard series was a huge success. |
With the average length of boar being around the 3 metre mark, if the boards belonging to the competitors were laid end to end along the beach at Trigg on the weekend there would have been over a quarter of a kilometre of boards stretched along the beach. To be a truly competitive surfer competitors need to be able to adapt themselves to various conditions and surf size and Yallingup surfer Justin Redman proved his versatility on the weekend to win the Sunova Surfboards Open division of the second round of the Iluka State Longboarding series for the second consecutive time. After winning the last event in large surf on his home break at Yallingup in April, Redman continued his winning run in Perth this weekend by posting a 9.27 point scoring ride out of a possible 10 to set the pace for his final. There was no looking back for Redman as his fellow competitors desperately tried to match Redman’s score, but were unable to replicate the talented goofy footers ride. City Beach surfer Rahn Goddard posted a 7.17 pt ride which was the closest that any other of the finalists came to Redmans high scoring wave. While Goddard, Paul Thompson (Margaret River) and Bob Monkman (Yallingup) were busy trying hard to knock Redman from his perch the talented goofy footer further cemented his lead with his second scoring ride seeing him awarded a 7.50pts giving him his second consecutive win. “It was hard Yakka out there, waves were pretty inconsistent and finding a good one was hard, but I managed to get a couple of good scores and the win makes it worth while” said Redman, “I don’t know what happened to Wally (Paul Thompson) as usually I have him to seriously contend with in the final, but this time I had this grommet nipping at my heels” added Redman. In a tense and dare I say it again, nail biting final, Redman (30.65pts) just pipped Queensland’s Josh Constable (30.55pts) by 0.10 of a point. Constable who had remained undefeated throughout the entire event went head to head with Redman right down to the final siren.
